I’ve been wanting to share on my experience during the Noire Exposé pitch competition. The audio above was what I recorded the rising after the pitch in which we won shared third place.
I share the Marcus Garvey speech below because when I was struggling with staying motivated and getting clarity on my pitch in the week before, this speech was critical for re-invigorating and re-aligning me. Particularly the the first half.
If Malcolm X’s voice is like water to soothe, awaken, refresh and strengthen then Marcus Garvey’s voice is fire to electrify and rocket you forward. Let me know what you think. xo
Marcus Garvey: "Any Leadership"
My favorite quote from Garvey’s speech:
“Any leadership that teaches you to depend upon another race is a leadership that will enslave you.”
According to GPT, this speech of Marcus Garvey’s was delivered at Madison Square Garden in 1920 (August 2) at the inaugural meeting/convention of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA).
I struggle with this tho because the audience doesn’t sound like a stadium audience. I don’t know what Madison Square Garden looked like in 1920 but I imagine a crowd of thousands would’ve sounded different than what we hear in the audio.
Will keep searching. One love
